Early 2016 PC Build for VR
Here’s the parts list for the PC I built to play upcoming VR experiences. This is a bit overkill, but will provide some future-proofing. I’ve listed some cheaper options. Links are Amazon affiliate links.
– NZXT S340 Mid Tower Case (White)
Cheaper option: Any ATX case should do, but this one is nicer looking than most and easy to work in.
– EVGA 850 G2 80+ GOLD, 850W Modular Power Supply
Cheaper option: A 750W supply would probably be fine, as would a less-efficient Bronze-rated.
– ASUS Z170-A ATX DDR4 Motherboard
Cheaper option: Any Z170 chipset, LGA 1151 socketed board from a reputable manufacturer should do.
– Intel Boxed Core I7-6700K 4.00 GHz
Cheaper option: An i5 would be sufficient.
– Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler (4 heat pipes)
Cheaper option: I don’t think I’d spend much less on a cooler.
– Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2133 Non-ECC RAM
Cheaper option: For now, 8 GB of RAM would get you by. Buy a well-known brand.
– NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU (I already had an NVIDIA-branded GTX 980 around the house, so this isn’t the exact card I used)
Cheaper option: GTX 970 or equivalent; the minimum requirement for first generation VR setups.
– Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD
Cheaper option: Lower capacity SSD for OS + traditional HD for storage. Or just an HD.
– TP-LINK Archer T8E WiFi Adapter
Cheaper option: Skip WiFi and use ethernet.
– Any keyboard and mouse of your choice. I’ve been quite happy with my WASD mechanical keyboard with brown switches and this simple SteelSeries mouse.
