Rustler's Rooste is the essential Western restaurant that everyone needs to visit when in town, and locals should frequent more often to unwind. What's better than a historical venue (RR has been around since the 1970s) with a killer view? Friendly and attentive staff and delicious western barbecue food! Did I mention there's a slide? RR sits at the top of a hill near Arizona Grand Resort between Tempe and Ahwatukee. You can't miss the lights. There is a small parking lot at the top that can fill up quickly, or there is more parking at the bottom of the hill with a shuttle that will take you to the restaurant. The walk up is steep- but doable- if you don't want to wait for the shuttle. Once at the entrance be sure to say hi to Horny the bull, a live long horned steer! You can then enter the restaurant via the hostess stand and a trip down the slide or be boring and take the steps. All the details are here- sawdust and hay on the floor, live country cover band, and even rattlesnake on the menu! How does it taste? Not really like chicken, and it has lots of tiny bones like a fish filet. But not bad! Worth a taste. Other menu items of note- the pork chops are juicy and delicately seasoned but for the price you can't beat the Cowboy Stuff- a platter of chicken, shrimp, kebabs, veggies, beans and more! It's enough for 3 people, especially with the complimentary biscuits at each table. To drink there is a full bar that has some local beer options. I had the San Tan Devils Ale, but be sure to ask because they can rotate out. Done with dinner but want to party? Stay and cut a rug with the live country cover band and ample dance floor. But by far the best thing about RR is the view. It's why they call it "beef and brew with a view." RR overlooks the city of Phoenix from the glistening lights to the planes landing at Sky Harbor. You can't beat it. Get here early, grab a drink, and watch one of the spectacular sunsets AZ is known for. And visit often!
