Yesterday, John Cho dropped the bombshell that his Hikaru Sulu would be gay in Star Trek Beyond. While the actor said the film would “not make a big thing” out of the reveal, it was a big deal for plenty of fans. Star Trek has been famously progressive since its earliest days, and yet the franchise has had no prominent gay characters to date. A gay Sulu seemed like an exciting step forward.
But one who wasn’t so thrilled about the news? George Takei himself. The original Sulu actor says that while he’s “delighted that there’s a gay character,” he feels it’s “really unfortunate” it had to be Sulu. Meanwhile, Star Trek Beyond writer and star Simon Pegg, who helped make the decision in the first place, says he “respectfully disagree[s]” with Takei’s stance. Read More »

Alex Garland‘s Annihilation is quietly wrapping up filming and I wish this movie had an official release date so I could start counting down the days until its release. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of filmmaker and material – Jeff VanderMeer‘s 2014 novel is one of the best genre novels I’ve read in a long time and Garland has already proven himself to be adept with small scale, creepy, adult science fiction with last year’s Ex Machina (one of our favorite films of 2015).
While the production has been pretty quiet, a slew of images from the set have been slowing arriving online via social media over the past few weeks, giving us our first kind-of, sort-of official look at this film.

The Star Trek franchise has been progressive since its earliest days, when it was bold enough to feature a starship crew composed of various ethnicities and backgrounds working together to explore the galaxy and better humanity. The portrait of a universe where people embrace each other’s differences and just work together to get the job done has always been as much of a draw for Trek fans as all of the weird science fiction and planet-hopping adventuring.
However, fans have spent years wondering when Star Trek would boldly go where it has never gone before and finally introduce a major gay character. Now, we’ve learned that Star Trek Beyond has broken through this barrier by revealing that Hikaru Sulu, the Enterprise helmsman played by John Cho, has a husband (and a young daughter) waiting for him back on Earth.

This is a pretty good summer for Danny McBride. He has his latest HBO show, Vice Principals, premiering soon, and he’s currently shooting Ridley Scott‘s Alien: Covenant in Australia. Co-creating another potential success like Eastbound & Down and getting to work on an Alien movie? That’s hardly a bad way to spend the summer. When we heard about McBride’s casting in the sequel, his role was unclear, but the actor says he’s playing the captain of the spacecraft Covenant.

20th Century Fox and the Alamo Drafthouse recently celebrated the Alien franchise with Alien Day, but there’s still more celebrating to be done with this series. July 18th marks the 30th anniversary of James Cameron‘s Aliens. For the occasion, Cameron, producer Gale Anne Hurd, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Paxton, and more will participate in a panel at the quickly approaching San Diego Comic Con.

I wasn’t a fan of the Power Rangers television series when it aired — maybe I was a year or two too old for it, or maybe I was already over my Voltron days. Whatever the case, I haven’t found excitement for the upcoming Power Rangers movie. And then last month Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston signed on to the film as Zordon, a character that appeared as a giant floating head in a tube in the TV series. I thought, that’s interesting. And then a teaser poster for the film was released (you can see it right after the jump), which was not what I expected from this particular franchise. Okay, so maybe I am a little curious now to see what the Power Rangers movie will be.
And now we have Bryan Cranston talking about how the movie is wildly different from the 1990s television series, comparing more to a Dark Knight-style reimagining of the franchise.

We’re a little over a week away from the release of Paul Feig‘s reboot of Ghostbusters, and that mean the onslaught of TV advertisements is in full force. Since I record my TV shows, I don’t usually watch commercials, but in the process of fast-forwarding, I see a Ghostbusters TV spot at least once during every single show that I watch.
