Sony is trying to revive Flatliners, and they’re enlisting Kiefer Sutherland to help them out. The actor, who starred in the original Flatliners from 1990, has signed on for the upcoming remake, which will star Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons. Remakes sometimes elicit knee-jerk irritation from moviegoers tired of seeing the same dreck over and over. But when done right, they’re not so bad and can even be kind of great. And maybe no one is doing them better right now than Disney. The studio has been on a tear lately, dishing up new versions of Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and more for audiences and critics to gobble up. (They had a rare stumble with Alice Through the Looking Glass, but hey, it happens to the best of us.) The next film from their animated library to get the live-action treatment is Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the new Beauty and the new Beast.

We’re a little over a week away from the release of Paul Feig‘s reboot of Ghostbusters, and that mean the onslaught of TV advertisements is in full force. Since I record my TV shows, I don’t usually watch commercials, but in the process of fast-forwarding, I see a Ghostbusters TV spot at least once during every single show that I watch. While everyone tends to turn their noses up at movie remakes, the world seems to be at peace with films journeying to the small screen. Sure, we occasionally have to put up with shows like that ill-fated new take on Rush Hour, but that’s a small price to pay for the likes of Friday Night Lights and Fargo, shows that use a familiar name to build something big and beautiful and carefully constructed for serialized storytelling. It’s reached the point where a television version of a beloved movie feels like a creatively safer proposition than a big screen remake.
So the news that Walter Hill’s classic film The Warriors is being developed as a television series for Hulu doesn’t fill me with instant dread, especially since it’s in the capable hands of Joe and Anthony Russo.

Adding to the barrage of Disney’s remakes, late this summer comes a contemporary take on Pete’s Dragon, the film that blended animation with live-action all the way back in 1977. This looks like a magical update of the old movie from Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director with a performance from young star Oakes Fegley that feels like the kind of child actor that Steven Spielberg would have discovered. But will this movie have the same kind of heart and spirit of adventure of the director’s films? A new Pete’s Dragon TV spot is certainly reassuring, complete with a nice little song to guide us. Whether or not you’re going to see the reboot of Ghostbusters, you might be interested in seeing what it would have been like to see Ghostbusters 3 come together. Unfortunately, with Harold Ramis passed away and Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson getting up there in the years, it’s not likely to happen. But thanks to the magic of technology, one fan has given us a possible version of Ghostbusters 3.
You may remember back in 2009, a Ghostbusters video game was release for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and a few more systems. It was easily the best Ghostbusters game ever made, not only because it was written by Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman but because it featured the voices of all the original cast members. Now one fan has taken the cinematics and some gameplay footage from the Ghostbusters video game and edited it into a feature-length Ghostbusters 3.

We’re heading into the final two weeks of promotion leading up to the release of Paul Feig‘s new Ghostbusters. Companies like Lyft are getting in on the fun by offering a fans a chance to get a ride in the new Ecto-1 and you should keep an eye out for Twinkies with key lime slime cream inside them. And now two new videos offer a couple different glimpses at the movie.
First up, a new Ghostbusters gadgets featurette focuses on the new gadgets and technology, from the updated proton packs and ghost traps to all-new gadgets like proton grenades and a “ghost shotgun” and more. Then after you’re done checking out the gadgets, get a small taste of what it’s like to wield some of that new tech with a sneak peek at the Ghostbusters VR experience from The Void. Even though I was one of the few people who didn’t flat out hate the Fall Out Boy cover of the Ghostbusters theme that debuted last week, I’ll be the first to admit that it doesn’t constitute good music. At the same time, the original theme is only beloved because it’s soaked in nostalgic love for the original movie, because Ray Parker Jr.’s signature tune is not good music either. But that’s neither here nor there, because now we have a Japanese Ghostbusters theme cover that delivers the perfect contemporary update of the original song, complete with choreographed proton pack dancing and more.
