First Mentors announced for the ILAB Mentoring Programme
ILAB has recently launched the ILAB International Mentoring Programme. This programme aims to help young or recently established booksellers throughout the world by offering support and counselling on a one to one basis. The ILAB International Mentoring Programme gives experienced booksellers the opportunity to lend a hand in the early days of a bookseller’s career when help is likely most needed. ILAB would like to thank the booksellers who have listed in the programme for agreeing to act as mentors for our next generation in the rare book trade!
The experience and expertise of the booksellers listed below speaks for itself. All are volunteering their time as prospective mentors for newer entries in the antiquarian and rare book trade.

Obituary: Remembering ILAB bookseller Bernard Rosenthal
Bernard Rosenthal died in Oakland after a week’s illness on January 14th, 2017, at the age of 96. He was a Bavarian Tuscan who carried his spiritual home with him and found in California a snug harbor. His Florentine mother compensated for the German birth of her children by addressing them always in Italian. It was the language Rosenthal reverted to on his deathbed. Like his grandfather Jacques, the great Munich antiquarian bookseller, he wore his Jewishness lightly, although it was the key factor that brought him to Berkeley in 1939. It was here that he shed the H in Bernhard and soon became “Barney,” the nickname by which he was ever after universally known.

Baillière, Paris 1862 - Grand in-8. [265 x 180 mm] Collation : VI, (2), 70, XI, 194 pp., 1 portrait-frontispice et 91 planches hors-texte. Demi-chagrin rouge à coins, dos orné. (Reliure de l'époque). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ First edition. Illustrated by 92 plates photographic images (albumen prints), taken by Adrien Tournachon, the young brother of Nadar (Felix Tournachon). This is the "grande édition" with a frontispice portrait, 82 large photographs, 2 engravings in the text (counting as N° 1 and 2) and 9 plates with 144 small pictures. Complete copies of this first "grande" edition are very rare. In the first edition, photographs are well contrasted, which is not the case in the second one. Garrison-Morton 4973. Less

Itamarati Grafica e Editora, (Ipirangia, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1991 - First edition. Small oblong quarto. Very brief text in Portuguese. Twenty-four photographic images. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper with a small smudge on the rear panel. An exceptionally rare book of nude photography of adolescent Brazilian girls, published to accompany an exhibition of photographs in Sao Paulo. The devoutly Roman Catholic Brazilian government authorities seized and then destroyed 236 copies of the 500 copy run of this title just a week after its publication. Police raided Cabral's studio, gallery, and printer, and confiscated his negatives and existing prints of the photographs. After two years and legal vindication, Cabral received his negatives back, although in varying degrees of damage. The American edition, titled *Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels*, and published by Ophelia Editions in 2000, with 27 additional photographs was again suppressed when one of the models, now grown to adulthood, sued for invasion of privacy. Despite the publisher's eventual victory in the lawsuit, the book was still effectively suppressed, and when it now appears on the secondary market, it invariably commands four figures.[WITH] publisher's maquette and proofs for the American edition, as follows: 1. a full set of printer's "blue" proofs for the photos, text, and dustwrapper on blue proofing paper; 2. a full set of same on glossy paper; and 3. a full set of the folded and gathered sheets on glossy paper, laid into a proof of the dustwrapper.A rare book, with unique accompanying material. Provenance on request. *OCLC* locates two copies of the American edition, and no copies of the Brazilian edition. Less

Bábolna, c. 1885. - 11 vintage photo prints (ca. 90 x 120 mm, but one 105 x 170 mm) on backing cardboard (20 x 25 cm). Highly uncommon photographs of Arabian horses (all individually captioned) at the famous Bábolna stud in Hungary, the principal stud for producing the best horses for the Austro-Hungarian military in the 19th century. The "Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok" (Bábolna National Stud) was founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1789. In 1816 it was decreed that henceforth only Arabian stallions should be used for stud service - a policy that raised the quality of the Austrian cavalry's horses to a famous level and necessitated the frequent introduction of new pure-bred Arabian stallions from the Middle East. One of the greatest commanders and stud-masters of Bábolna, Mihály Fadlallah el Hedad, hailed from Syria. - The photos show portraits of the horses Sechun, Nadir, Tahita, Nasira, Celeby, Dzerid, El Hafi, El Denedzi, Hiläl, Riat, as well as a larger group portrait showing several of the horses with their Arabian and Austro-Hungarian trainers. Some slight staining to backboards, but altogether well-preserved. Extremely rare. Less

Collecting Angling books has wide appeal, and not just for folk that fish. Many of the intrinsic characteristics of angling – solitude, meditative activity, excitement of the chase, celebration of the natural world – are also reflected in the collecting endeavour. Early literature with an Australian angling connection extends back to 1880, with the book Vacation Tours in New Zealand and Tasmania, by James Coutts. [+] More

The polar regions have always had a huge attraction for mankind and its explorers. What lay in or beyond those icy wastes? An open sea? The way to Asia? Many set out to find out, never to return. Probably no other field of exploration has brought forth so many heroes, sung and unsung, so much suffering and so many, often unnecessary, deaths. Probably most of the gruesome deaths in the icy reaches will never be known or told, but several made it into print from the 16th to the 20th century. I have picked some expeditions at random, my only criterion being that there had to be horrible suffering, death, and, if possible, cannibalism. Part II featuring Robert Falcon Scott, Vitus Bering, Umberto Nobile, Hjalmar Johansen, Alfred Wegener. [+] More
