First Mentors announced for the ILAB Mentoring Programme

ILAB has recently launched the ILAB International Mentoring Programme. This programme aims to help young or recently established booksellers throughout the world by offering support and counselling on a one to one basis.
The ILAB International Mentoring Programme gives experienced booksellers the opportunity to lend a hand in the early days of a bookseller’s career when help is likely most needed. ILAB would like to thank the booksellers who have listed in the programme for agreeing to act as mentors for our next generation in the rare book trade!

The experience and expertise of the booksellers listed below speaks for itself.  All are volunteering their time as prospective mentors for newer entries in the antiquarian and rare book trade.

Obituary: Remembering ILAB bookseller Bernard Rosenthal

Bernard Rosenthal died in Oakland after a week’s illness on January 14th, 2017, at the age of 96. He was a Bavarian Tuscan who carried his spiritual home with him and found in California a snug harbor. His Florentine mother compensated for the German birth of her children by addressing them always in Italian. It was the language Rosenthal reverted to on his deathbed. Like his grandfather Jacques, the great Munich antiquarian bookseller, he wore his Jewishness lightly, although it was the key factor that brought him to Berkeley in 1939. It was here that he shed the H in Bernhard and soon became “Barney,” the nickname by which he was ever after universally known.

  • Australian Angling Books

Collecting Angling books has wide appeal, and not just for folk that fish. Many of the intrinsic characteristics of angling – solitude, meditative activity, excitement of the chase, celebration of the natural world – are also reflected in the collecting endeavour. Early literature with an Australian angling connection extends back to 1880, with the book Vacation Tours in New Zealand and Tasmania, by James Coutts.

Collecting Rare Books and First Editions: Chilling Tales from the Icy Wastes II

The polar regions have always had a huge attraction for mankind and its explorers. What lay in or beyond those icy wastes? An open sea? The way to Asia? Many set out to find out, never to return. Probably no other field of exploration has brought forth so many heroes, sung and unsung, so much suffering and so many, often unnecessary, deaths. Probably most of the gruesome deaths in the icy reaches will never be known or told, but several made it into print from the 16th to the 20th century. I have picked some expeditions at random, my only criterion being that there had to be horrible suffering, death, and, if possible, cannibalism. Part II featuring Robert Falcon Scott, Vitus Bering, Umberto Nobile, Hjalmar Johansen, Alfred Wegener.

Bibliophile Societies - Miniature Book Society Conclave in Boston, 2014

Who ever thought that books that can’t exceed 3 inches in any direction could become such a huge success! What was to be a three day visit to Boston to learn about miniature books turned into an adventure that provided me with an excellent opportunity to meet avid collectors, printers, and booksellers that revolves around the saying “yes, a book can be too big!”
