    Growing up, the Catholic Churches I attended always smelled like incense. I loved the aroma that managed to fill every crevice of the high ceilings & pews to the burning candles near the altar. That being said, our masājid really need to do better because musty is not welcoming.

    This was a thoughtful rejoinder by to our essays. I don't think I was clear. I'm not asking for a Western style Enlightenment for the Muslim world; I don't think they need a John Locke so much as a Thomas Aquinas. Great conversation, would love to continue it.

    The challenge, reminds us, is not just political but also religious and cultural. But wasn’t it exactly like that in Christendom a while ago, when Locke wrote A Letter Concerning Toleration, and toleration was a radical idea?

    "Multi-culturalism" of this evil type should not be given any pass. For no culture can be legitimately above human life, freedom and dignity.

    Egypt's Sisi wants you to believe his security forces' abuses are just a cultural difference. As always, dictators want to define "culture" & "tradition" to defend their crimes. Victims of systematic torture in Egypt surely have a different definition.

    The thing with Western liberal democracies (which include France) is that they should keep up high standards of liberty, inclusion and tolerance. Their flaws serve the "whataboutism" of illiberal states, lowering the global threshold. But their achievements are undeniable.

    Sad (but comic by some regards) collection of clichés and biases on 🇫🇷 society and policies. Sided interviews & denial of facts on actual integration of immigrants and islam in Fr despite challenges - and, yes, threats that society has been facing with widely admitted resilience
