George Sterner is a 2019 CrossFit Games athlete and friend of the sub. He came onto our radar a few years back winning the first ever r/crossfit open challenge and has been training crossfit since 2014. In this time he’s found a lot of success, netting himself 2 regional performances and qualifying for the Games this year straight out of the CrossFit Open by coming 8th in the world.

When he’s not training, George is studying to become a structural engineer and, just like the rest of us, combing through shitposts on reddit.

He’ll be stopping by on September 2nd at 7pm ET (UTC-4) to answer any questions you have for him about training, the Games, school, or just general reddit questions about whether a hot dog is a sandwich or not.

The thread for questions will be posted about 24hrs before the AMA so that even if the time isn’t so hot for you, you’ll be able to get in there and get your questions answered.

So give it up for our boy, and get those questions ready!

Any advice for someone who is deployed on a carrier multiple months out of the year. Nutrition, workouts, apps that can spark ideas for routines, really anything!

As the title says, I’ve just finished up my first month of CrossFit. I was so nervous for my first class but I’ve been going five times a week since I started and I love it. I moan and groan about the cardio heavy workouts but I still enjoy them. I love that each day is different so there’s always a challenge.

My gym doesn’t have an on ramp program, but because it’s small I’ve managed to get heaps of one on one time with the coaches. They’ve also signed me up for a snatch workout which I’m actually really looking forward to.

I still can’t do a pull up, am just getting push ups, and at miles away from a toes to bar, but I can feel myself getting stronger and improving every day.

I went to a dinner after the gym with a whole bunch of people and I really like the community aspect. Everyone is friendly, supportive, and great! There’s two girls who are the “super fit, mean girl” type and won’t speak to anyone except the super fit guys but they’re the exception not the rule.

Anyway, I’m not really sure what I wanted to say except thanks to those who encouraged me to attend my first class and to those who are nervous to try - give it a go!

I’ve had a home gym for about 2 years now, thought I would post some of my feedback for anyone looking to set one up.

The weather was annoying to deal with since my setup was all outside. I live in the Southwest so mostly clear skies but the rare rain day can throw you off. Plus scheduling workout time when it’s not 100degrees out is a big deal. I just moved into a new spot where all my stuff is covered now though. Spent about $100 in tarps over those 2 years to protect my stuff.

Cost for everything was about $1200.

Stuff I bought New: Barbell, squat stands, adjustable kettlebell handles, medicine ball, collars, bands, jump rope and lifting gear. Everything else I bought used and am glad I did saved a lot of money, quality/longevity has still been there. Only thing I would have changed was buying a used squat cage with pull-up bar instead of the stands. My current pull-up bar is a tree limb lol.

I made the lifting platform myself from 3/4inch plywood and 3/4inch horsestall mat (was quite a bit cheaper than buying ‘exercise flooring’). Has held up fantastic.

Most used equipment: Barbell.

Surprising MVP: Adjustable dumbbell handles. Man saved so much getting these. Bought used for $35 and it’s great being able to have dumbbells I can make 8lbs-150lbs and it saves so much space. I think it will be the same for the KB handles but I just bought those so I will have to wait and see. Bought 2 of the KB handles though so they can also be used for farmers walks.

Least used: Weight Vest, Gymnastic Rings. Expected that when I bought the vest though, 100% bought it just for Murph.

Next thing on the purchase list is 2 45lb bumper plates so I can drop from when the top when needed, 4 more 10lb plates then maybe a push/pull sled.

It’s fantastic being able to work out on your own schedule. I have spent almost the same on the equipment I would have going to a gym for 2 years. I will say you have to be a self motivated person tho because the gym is your house... where you also like to relax and watch TV so it can be tough to switch in your brain ok let’s go workout when your not going to a gym somewhere. On the plus side you get to set your own custom tailored programming tho 😀

Anyone know any brands I should look at that aren't charging $50+ for a pair of shorts?

The shorts I have right now are on the way out.
