I am appalled that Amazon is encouraging teachers to upload "curated" teaching materials - many of which are copyrighted.... The work of teachers is no less protected than that from Scholastic, Pearson, or any other educational publisher. Further, many of these teacher-created resources include fonts and clip art (purchased by the teacher) which are not licensed for this kind of distribution.

How sad that Amazon values the work, creativity, and innovation of teachers so poorly that it encourages them to post their work for free. It's fine to pay the big publishers who write the often uninspired and irrelevant textbooks, but sadly, not the teachers who actually work with the students and are required to meet the current standards, and so naturally know how best to create the materials needed.

After teaching for 23 years, I now use my education, experience, and expertise to create high-quality curriculum for oth...er teachers to use with their students. Creating resources for teachers is not only my passion, it is my livelihood and it provides for my family. Knowing teachers and students across the globe are using my materials is both humbling and rewarding and I am abundantly grateful for the opportunity I have as a Teacher-Author to work diligently to provide for my family in this way.

Knowing that Amazon Inspire is offering "free" resources that infringe upon the copyright of my Teacher-Author friends and colleagues -- copyrighted resources that have been illegally uploaded by Amazon Inspire users who are neither the authors nor owners of the resources -- makes me heartsick.

Since Amazon started as a book outlet, they clearly know a thing or two about copyright laws. And since they are a multi-billion dollar company, they undoubtedly have access to whatever legal advice and technological means necessary to put parameters in place that would ensure academic resources uploaded to their site are not infringing upon others' intellectual property. Yet, Amazon Inspire has made some serious missteps right out of the gate by making resources available to share illegally and against the copyright owner's Terms of Use. This is a clear violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a serious breach of ethics, and a slap in the face to all hard-working Teacher-Authors who either provide for their families or supplement their families' incomes by creating superb-quality resources for teaching colleagues.
