The political declaration just reaffirms the principal Brussels message from the beginning. If we want a close economic relationship we have to align. If we don't we have to diverge. And Britain basically still hasn't made up its mind which it wants.

My feeling on the leaked draft future relationship is that there is some vague language in there as a nod to mollify Tory eurosceptics but the actual fundamentals are unchanged

It’s pretty cool that the UK spent a year trying to bypass nasty Michel Barnier and speak directly to member states (who would naturally be horrified at the Commission’s hard line) only to discover that oh, the member states think Barnier was a soft touch and gave away too much
