1. It is possible that this is now about Trump's pleasure in being a tough guy.

I'm not one of those people to throw around the "nobody truly gets us" charge. To the contrary, I know for a fact that there are many Turks who have keen insights into American politics, economy and culture. Erdogan, and/or those around, may not rank among this group.
