this is Potomac Watch Wood College ago and Kimberly Strassel your ticket for insights into politics in the twenty sixteen election while composing go here from the studio the Wall Street Colonel opinion pages in Manhattan with my colleague and anger here and and how you doing today that Bill and Joe rego ... editoral page colleague from Brookfield Wisconsin just west of Milwaukee suburban Milwaukee Joel on assignment covering the Wisconsin primary ally ... it all up to what the error occurred rally with ... Harley Purina and of ... on given up on Scott Walker ... in the door that occurs ... right so be sure to get some bratwurst while you're there ... the butter burger ... to make it to Green Bay EU nor ago ... giving him ... and told you where to go higher ... so of my hometown away ok so a ... today we're going to talk ... about the Bernie Sanders big three victories last week landslide Bernie ... they're trying to catch up to Hillary Clinton is the of the prayer ... or is this true instead of going through the motions for the Democratic primaries voters ... and then the Wisconsin primary were Joe was covering and ... fencing developments there and ... take results to make it a turning point in the election ... contest against him ... so let's start to ID and with Bernie Sanders and ... the winning ... with more than seventy percent of the vote in three caucuses Alaska ... a Washington State and Hawaii at this stage of an election campaign primary campaign where he is ... solidly trailing ... Hillary Clinton you'd expect the front runner ... to a roll of these majorities not to not that the challenger what's going on ... well it's the continuing story of from a lack of enthusiasm for nori Aukland among certain segments of of Democratic electorate ... and with the white men and ... young people so call millennials are twenty sixteen Deloitte the ... socialist message home ... Kelly just on a personal story I was talking to a friend of mine know couple days ago and Stanford Cisco ... which has a lot of Democrats ... and he has a lot of Democratic friends and home they are not in their twenties are of ... basically pretty successful Democrats in her thirties and forties ... Annie said virtually eighty eighty five percent of them are supporting on Sanders and it can't possibly be because their socialist and socialist ... real sense ... but this is gonna be ... really beginning to disturb the Democratic professionals that there is this lack of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton ... they're going to be pitching their boss forward to election day in November and the word is turnout is she going to be able to bring Democrats hold ... up to vote for her in November against potentially a candidate say in Donald Trump who if nothing else generates enthusiasm we don't know what what direction it's going to go in ... for or against our dance ... but Dom he is the bigger of defeats that she's been ... taking at the hands of Bernie Sanders ... that just gotta be up and ... bad ... bad signal ... yes I can tell I do think it is a sign of of of of weakness lack of enthusiasm candidacy and yet ... there really doesn't appear to be a ... serious prospect that Sanders can get the nomination he's now saying is kept saying well ... we think that if we can catcher in the delegate count with some of the plate victory this week and force ... the so called superdelegates to come our way of the super delegates ... are not that they don't exist in the Republican process but they do in the democratic process and are kind of fail safe for the establishment ... these are elected officials former elected officials who are freelancers they can vote for whomever they want ... they're basically supposed to provide a cushion ... at the convention ... in case you get somebody old me be like Donald Trump who comes out of nowhere ... it might steal but that the ... nomination ... and I know law to Republicans are wishing they had to superdelegates numbers in the Democratic race ... so far according to Associated Press four hundred and sixteen ... of those superdelegates are pledged to Hillary Clinton ... twenty nine ... played twenty nine only to Bernie Sanders ... and then now course taken on what ... is in and various a mess we're in a new pouring into on ... line ... not likely is Joe ... no I don't think so ... the superdelegates were created ... after the McGovern nomination so that it is sort of a profit ... the current prevent the candidate like Bernie Sanders of getting the nomination ... and if you look at the Democratic race ... going forward it is ... awfully unlikely ... given that the left of ... the allocated to the delegates that are left to be allocated ... to standards really can't catch up to worst of that this ... I hail Mary is ... that none of it to help manage ... of but but it continued chewing on the show that the ... killer climbed the historically weak heart murmur them on the other things that ... he Sanders this begun to do is to play what Dawn would actually call the John K sick card ... and that's the argument that looked at the head to head polls John K sick is being Hillary Clinton knows tolls but Applied Bernie Sanders and beading Donald Trump by an average of seventeen points but up ... easily beating Hillary Clinton by an average of and it does ... for us so it's a I can I can clean up in these big cruise by quite a bit and he's even with a second an entire commies and a lot of time the mesmerized by his head as especially the one that separates and speaking from a seventeen points or by love and ... what the heck does that mean I think what it means all respect the beginning of this conversation ... is that yet ... Hillary Clinton were strong authentic candidate if she were not campaigning ... with all this baggage whether it's up ... the Clinton Foundation and the e mails ... and trustworthiness ... if she were a normal Democratic candidate ... that can or they would perch with the walking into the White House ... go ahead so I wouldn't that ... maybe have the upper level ... and pace both ... standard and Patrick have been ... our first appeared to become a benign neglect ... record where the if you if you look at ... oh what a hundred times each year can really ... challenge the ... wording and or ideology all that's wrong with that anything ... she moved to the left away from Yuma polenta and torches ... of the ... daily or socialism ... or whatever it ... takes that can allow the way just read the above the fray in and haven't really gone head to head ... out with Tom ... Cruise or any of the other ... team Canada to a cooler ... Republican race so far ... to those those numbers could change ... quite a lot it if it were fact the general election candidate ... in yen Bernie Sanders ... profile ... the dollar do fairly well and Scott says you have the the Liberal house of ... of ... Madison Madison surroundings you have ... Milwaukee which as the reasonable student population but also has a ... union ... of population people who of the ... manufacturing economy and Kenosha Racine southern part of the state to spend her ... suffer some ... years by ... the departure of manufacturing jobs so Bernie Sanders I know he's ... reasonably close in the polls this could be he's hoping that this is a Michigan upset that he can pull off ... another big Midwest up seven get momentum ... to go into New York ... in two weeks ... yet will that that that is helping to that of boat Quay and hell are you that have been here this week ... the the the ... the ay I get it done ... the problem for ... you ... in ... it as a victory to replicate across the Midwest which ... was with the index over the Democratic side you can can ... either be replicated in Ohio across the border for example so ... that he does have some enthusiasm of but the ... attendant if he can often launch of the tenth of May ... yes and I don't think that those delegates ... notwithstanding the dimples of the and the superdelegates no standing head to head polls the preference ... are going to change because despite to ... that the man ... those polls I think they feel that Bernie Sanders wants his message has real beliefs are exposed in a June election campaign ... he could not we think that's ... an almost universal belief among the Democrats that I'd talk to ... although Donald Trump ... they they made they they they may change their mind if trump the isthe is the nominee ... socialist America are weak ... I'm going to spend the majority to go ok so ... aam ... but stock let's turn to the Republicans Republican race until you're out there ... Scott Walker Governor of Wisconsin ... aam hero of many Republicans for his three election wins and six five the sixty five and have six years ... he is aam ... and or stickers today what the impact you think oh ... it's ... I know pretty significant impact ... Scott Walker while its popularity it wide ... eyed and get that that ... that the good guy and got out of the presidential race ... of but among Republicans and of most recent of Mark at all ... he had eighty five percent approval rating so if you covered if you look at the ... geographic center Whoppers or to the accountant around a lot to do while counties ... while Pasha the other ones I mean he he he ... he he he ... it's good to be huge ... um they support ... it seems to me that did Wisconsin years ... the ... and certainly never trump state that as with ... the income which would find itself ... on becoming a pro crude state ... if if I can make that make that distinction ... but I think ... people appeared to open ... a little bit ... fired up by the the ... the tenor of the campaign and the ... lack of civility the key ... at ... the time for tech star Ted Cruz inflation and so forth so that there's going to be a ... really ... strong ... I think that the two of our chart of break ... Donald Trump open on the Republican electorate ... so far and it ... is ... all the events that ... I've been to part time as a ... Nanterme like where there are Townhall ... at least among ... Ted Cruz and John K sick ... either to or participatory ... and and ... that that the state ... a couple of those that complain but ... later stake of a lot more ... it is more common to reach that of the campaign is if Ted Cruz of the developed area ... he is about evenly tightly ... with Donald Trump but I think things like ... Scott Walker's endorsement of ... being the ... extremely ... into account the crude Ted Cruz talk radio ... posts are are are ... influential ... Anna and I think that might be enough ... to give Ted Cruz a women in the conference ... you both about aspect of that so ... you know Scott Walker's endorsement of Ted Cruz ... like Jeb Bush's and Lindsey Graham before it ... um there's gonna be a new phrase for what the stats consist of this is not exactly ... a cruise endorsement it's an antique trunk rejection and what falls out from that this is ... the Ted Cruz support ... and ... you know it we won ... just anecdotally one runs into the same thing talking to friends around the country which ... would cruise it's always do I have to vote for cruises the alternative trial because I'm not that enthusiastic for clues but maybe that's the only ... option that I now ... know I think that that so that is exactly fair description ... of what the thinking is going on among many Republicans in these next primary states ... there are looking on the war ... and ... from the supporters among the most as warm up like this but ... there a law to Republicans or were simply what the DAX thirty to get the nomination and say are eight what do I need to do to stop them which who was the candidate who can stop ... and that's where even cruise that Scott Walker's come out here ... as he has some as indoor screws I think with ... if you talk to his people some reluctance but feeling he is the one who can stop ... Trump and Wisconsin and denying ... Trump these delegates ... what is it to a fifty two something like that to ... of me and that it never ends ... but not ... great but it's a winner take all state allocated in part by congressional district so the view is ... it wrong you they have to stop Trump era for them to get him short of the twelve thirty seven ... studies for the nomination store to take a break here what I am on the comeback and Henninger and the ... Tory again I will talk more about the Republican primary race with John K sick is to play a role in all ... in the Wisconsin primary ... will be right ... John Warnock one updates on the biggest stories of the day that lesson oh what's news from the Wall Street Journal from top business stories Apple says it paid weekend the security of their phones they make their customers' data more vulnerable to the economy I think the American consumer is ... alive and doing well collection twenty sixteen days in big day in presidential politics obviously is the day of the New Hampshire primary check back several times a day and enjoyed watching Oops from the Wall Street Journal WSJ podcast listen ambitiously ... now back to the show ... welcome back I'm Polish ago on her of my colleague and hitting her New York and jewelry a go in Brookfield Wisconsin so Joel aam you talk to people you talk to the case a campaign John Weaver is a campaign manager ... how do they expect to ... to to to campaign and compete and Scots well ... but ... there are over ... I was aware that ... other at a time to come home last night ... I met some of that to really focus ... on ... only hear what they think they can win ... try to deny ... that ... having where Ted Cruz or Donald Trump are not likely to prevail so I think they're ... trying to play a constructive role I ... I ... while they wouldn't let it explicitly I'd I don't think they expect to win here ... of but but I think that either play a constructive role as men ... go on to the tothe states where they feel they have a much better chance ... new York ... Maryland ... in and of the hearing Wednesday ... and that the crime ... it's not about winning the a ... but the winner take all primaries after Wisconsin are are largely through ... and that it is the cure delegate race that made them on a rack up ... as many delegates as they possibly can ... have some kind of ... a claim ... on the nomination of her however tenuous ... there really a part in it ... up ... Ted Cruz is ... likely to win a general action we ... certainly know that time ... when that ... barring ... some sort of outside of that event and are staying ... what would it be good to be a nominee to cool it actually went ... up and would make it to touch it so that that ... that that he meant driving ... and ... that's where the weather of it so it's a generates an Uncontested Convention strategy that's the only way they can get them on the ballot ... and and two and to get the are the ... top priority is denies Trump tell it's so funny can ... find in the States to ... to keep the Trump some numbers down ... and they leave defied in in July and then on that delegate front to the fascinating of competition ... in Louisiana where ... Ted Cruz has picked up an additional ten delegates ... over Trump even though Trump beat him in the primary narrowly they have a eighteen eighteen coming out of the primary key delegates each ... but Cruz's now picked up five from Rubio who released his after he left the race and five two and then uncommitted and stay giving him an additional from Trump ... and that ... the I think you have to give credit to the cruise campaign for its hostile and its organization and focusing on my ... the main task at hand which is delegate counting ... but Trump is now protesting that this is unfair ... and then threaten to so ... to to stop the process now ... I don't think there's a court in America that is going to grant the lawsuit ... but to ... but it's not fair it's not it is unfair I I think of that this is the way the process works yes please ... I cannot wait till Cleveland because I e ... fully expect Donald Trump is going to sue the Republican convention in Cleveland he doesn't get the nomination ... and ... guess what court land ... would take it but that's the way Trump place ... and if ... the reality is you know he is engaged and on multi layered chess match with ... Ted Cruz and John K sick ... and the ... cruise ... the one thing to say about Ted Cruz is that um ... his campaign ... on by all reports has a very sophisticated organization they have committed themselves to delicate coming ... from day one and most ... makes and what happened and we Xi'an is that he went in there with his organization ... selected the delicate manage to get delegates of the work that into going to ... Cleveland on the rules Committee and ... the agenda platform committee ... and Dom ... it really snuck one by the Trump people now there's an equally interesting piece in The Wall Street Journal right now ... about the difference between Hillary Clinton's organization on the ground in places like Iowa which is all for she still has people ... um Manning the phones they're staying in touch with local officials Trump has completely sold out just to see is pretty much completely pulled out of New Hampshire ... and local Republican officials in those states are saying we're pretty concerned about this you gotta have an organization ... if you're going to run for the presidency and we don't see the Trump people ... on the ground in our state and you know ... that could work to Ted Cruz's advantage going into this and then I couldn't agree more I think that this is a huge problem for the current campaign this is a mini in some ways he's run ... for president ... with ... a Twitter account and seven five cents ... at seven thirty seven and a personality in a big personality flies around the country and then as these mass rallies his an advance team ... but he has of has to say has a policy team is being generous its skeleton ... and to say that he is organizations he says he really doesn't and that's why he hasn't done as well among caucuses in caucuses as he has in ... primary ... and it's also where I think this is him ... essentially this ... hand in hand combat over delegates could be a place where to get the count gets very close ... Ted Cruz could duck could win out in the end Joe ... I think it needs to that doesn't seem to be very good at organizational you tell ... if you look at we cannot ... it is how does that he somehow and put off buying a delegate to her at the convention or ... but through ... to a court of law ... he still had to get to twelve thirty seven delegate ... delegate toward ... don't hurt can help by buying ... it if he does succeeded in getting us ... out don't give up the ballot ... in the nineteenth of hits on both ... another example from appeared Wisconsin ... but touchdown I turn on talk radio in color ... Trump on Charlie liked the show ... Charlie pride being one of the leaders of the never trump movement who were seated ... I'd to to completely dismantle our time putting it in Paris and ... an awful lot of ways ... at ... one point ... you know you you know I'm ... actively oppose your candidate day ... and come to know my my people and tell me that ... the ... Trump went on ... to other Wisconsin talk radio shows ... both of whom ... oppose our opponent ... and having that tend to experience repeated three times that's called the dead dead dead advance work and ... what's going to get fired bad bad bad bad press were no question but if the other thing that just a curiosity here is ... Charlie Sykes his former wife is done and so excuse the ... justice or judge on the to believe it's the seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ... and though one of those and potential Supreme Court nominees that Donald Trump floated ... in one of the Republican presidential debate said that in a bid to trump did make that connection I'd I'd ... well these ... days as the go ahead don't ... though I ... he ... he he works he ... is careening from from ... of one minor disaster to another ... and he he you know ... I'm going to have an later tonight and in change bill ... it ... Tom's first rally and I think it or nine days ... and am will thus if you cover can recover ... from our ... momentum on high ground campaign but but it ... is starting to seem ... really increasingly helpless ... the the the in in communicating in a hundred forty characters ... only goes ... so far I think especially in ... such a politically Kate Spade like like Wisconsin ... is that that that part is the reason you think that um maybe having some difficulty in Wisconsin to the use of varying he's Republican like it ... because of the three Scott Walker ... elections in five years ... in which you have ... he is ... a really sophisticated turnout key ... for for so some of these counties turned out for him and him and margins that are unbelievable something like ninety eight percent ... the recall of all the Republicans who are registered actually voted ... to some of these ... precincts ... I'm counties because the that they felt the stakes were so high ... so you have of the new people like Walker and Paul Ryan who is an extensive communication network and then you make the point about Charlie Sykes of local talk radio it's ... very different than the national talk radio ... supporters of prop like ... Rush Limbaugh and ... and and ... and Laura Ingram scored pushing Trump hor ... Nam ABBV haven't endorsed him per se but they're really pushing him hard ... and ... and frankly they're more doing and as a kind of ... readings play and the push of their favored issues like immigration and trade opposition ... whereas Sykes in some these other guys are much more engaged actively in ... Wisconsin politics ... and he and the substance of of of issues ... yes I mean it ... it it it can work it um ... somebody ... like picking McKenna for Apple whose whose ... political profile I think it is closer to some of the National ... that's me indicated ... upload their theses institutions that operate immigration for ... of but but ... still at it and comment said ... look we we need to build ... coalitions we ... need to ... get to work together ... I can think of it there's there's a um ... a lot of work on it and ... keep the other thing is ... that the ... company has a reputation as one state or a purple state ... and that's not exactly true it is more of a ... polarized state where ... of winning election depends on on activated ... that that debate ... of ... both parties both Republicans and Democrats ... Scott Walker Paul Ryan a Wisconsin Republican Party approved ... the very successful ... and as the style of politics and it looks to me ... like Ted Cruz is one thing ... that apparatus and giving them a new call to cheating ... Donald Trump and of the best time of ... my my hand ... admittedly anecdotal ... it is that there wouldn't be a very high turnout primary ... and probably complex which occurs ... that would be a big deal Ted Cruz for some pull on Wisconsin ... in that would be a shot across the bow ... of Donald Trump the crews can ... through early show the victory will stay at least among Republicans something that he hasn't been able to ... you know the only time some is gonna be a big primary up there eventually California ... elite I'm just above a pool in which Cruz has tightened up there with Trump thirty seven to try ... to thirty per cruise that the interesting thing is that inside the poll ... they have the most likely Republican voters in the primary and crews and Trump her time ... in California you would expect Donald Trump pretty substantially in California here's the other thing I Wisconsin Republicans is that to him ... their profile is a little more ideologically diverse than in some parts of ... the country and cruises death ... cruises problem and many of these states agreement so far as he does pour elite ... compared to trumpet among moderates and somewhat concerned ... we're as he does very well be trumped typically among the so called very conservatives ... and evangelicals or other Trump does ... well enough in both of those but not as well as Cr is now Wisconsin doesn't have a large evangelical population has to share ... and it says like Catholics ... and ... and it's gonna be a real question to see if the the so-called establishment Republican support ... that is emerging for cream ... can help him make inroads in those moderate ... and somewhat conservative precincts ... or those votes will go to John K sick ... instead ... yes I think that's ... a good question and on ... I'd you know but try may pull it out but but if he doesn't ... then I think he's gonna sit back and then reassess ... he's come so far he's that ... she's an extraordinary amount just on the basis of running the campaign as he adds ... but ... there's always a necessity had to up his game in some way to get past the thirty five forty percent ceiling and have either to a banned substance ... policy ... and last week when he came up in this interview and started to say that ... he doubted ... or wondered about the US is commitment to NATO what a weird thing to bring up ... at this point in the campaigns are talking about NATO which I think in most people's minds to something the associate with the United States ... was an odd ... thing to put in play and then he had so many people cracking back in Amman this ... this isn't quite in the same category is building a wall on the Mexican border ... alright so your for your predicting now you're thinking it's it's going well for workers right to own stocks ... the other thing that would make I'd never thought I would ... the payment but had courage to actually read all the message ... I in in in some ways for that ... more moderate non and Joe Cole somewhat conservative audience ... knowing he still promises to abolish the honor ... but he also ... talked about how in tax reform ... would increase wages increase cut jobs ... and and so forth and he's really hitting ... chomped on the issue of judges ... who who who was appointed to that of the Supreme Court ... and from ... the lack of practical solutions to the ... problems identified ... so ... while we still ... care Ted Cruz ... if you've actually done some work and he seemed to be shifting ... to the two methods the money that he'll be on it ... very conservative states are eyed Joe thank so much for ... calling in here from the field and Henninger thanks for being with us so today I'm Polish ago thank you for for for listing will be back later in the week with another Potomac Watch ... podcast which you can subscribe to ... and please do on Apple ... I tunes as well as WSJ that com slashed ... opinion or slash the cats thanks for listening and we hope to have you with this next time ...
